Reading Festival and Leeds Festival, 28th – 30th Aug 09

The Reading and Leeds Festivals are a pair of annual music festivals that take place in Reading and Leeds in England and are run by Festival Republic. The events both happen on the bank holiday weekend in August (on Friday, Saturday, Sunday), and share the same bill (usually with one or two exceptions). Between 1998 and 2007 the dual festivals were known officially as the “Carling Weekend” until parting ways with their sponsor Carling in November 2007.

In 2007 the capacity of the Reading site was 80,000 and the Leeds site was 70,000. This was an increase of several thousand on previous years[9] The Reading festival is held at Little John’s Farm on Richfield Avenue in central Reading, near the Caversham Bridge. The Leeds event is held in Bramham Park, the grounds of a historic house. Campsites are available at both sites and weekend tickets include free camping. Day tickets are also sold.

Typical scenario is

  • Main stage – major rock/indie/alternative acts
  • NME/Radio 1 stage – less well-known acts, building up to an alternative headline act
  • Carling stage – acts with less popular appeal and breakthrough acts
  • Radio 1 Lock Up Stage – underground punk/hardcore acts. Due to demand, from 2006 this stage took up 2 days rather than previous years where it was only 1 day.
  • Dance tent – dance music acts, on the day that the above stage does not run
  • Alternative tent – comedy and cabaret acts plus DJs.
  • TopMan Unsigned stage – Unsigned acts from the local area (Leeds only)

Bestival a Space Oddity, 11th – 13th Sept 09

Aside from the mind-blowing music and fantastical frolics, Bestival has always been renowned for its fancy dress themes. 2008’s fancy dress theme was a strangely prophetic one but in the rain-soaked surrounds of Robin Hill our 30,000 Freaks Under The Sea looked utterly stunning.  All of the Sponge Bobs, Jellyfish, Submarines, Octopuses and Mermaids gave Bestival its own special magical aura that kept us all smiling. This year the Bestival team are getting cosmic for 2009 and all things alien, space, and intergalactic is the theme for this years extravaganza. Book now or live in regret!!

Glastonbury Festival, 24th – 28th June 09

June 24, 2009toJune 28, 2009

Glastonbury Festival is the largest greenfield music and performing arts festival in the world and a template for all the festivals that have come after it. The difference is that Glastonbury has all the best aspects of being at a Festival in one astonishing bundle.

It’s like going to another country, a hip and thrilling Brigadoon that appears every year or so. Coming to Glastonbury involves a fair amount of travel, and probably a queue to get in but, when you get past these impediments, you enter a huge tented city, a mini-state under canvas. British law still applies, but the rules of society are a bit different, a little bit freer. Everyone is here to have a wild time in their own way.

Undoubtedly one of the U.K.s largest and most famous of festivals. Set against the backdrop of the Somerset hills and valleys this music and culture explosion is a unique and wonderful gathering. Every year it boasts a fine line up of international and local talent, and rain or shine pack yer wellies. However book your tickets now as they are likely to sell out well before the festival takes place. More tickets are available from the 2nd February.
